Riley (ライリー ()), also known as the Green Wind Spear, is a B-class adventurer in the Five-colored Blades. After a disagreement with the party leader, he left to form his own party consisting of criminal slaves.[1]

Appearance[]

Riley had long light-colored hair and eyes. He wore leather armor and carried a spear on his person.[2] He eventually wielded a magic weapon called Zephyr.[1]

Personality[]

Riley's childhood dream was to become like the protagonists of heroic tales that he heard. However, growing up, he became more pragmatic and somehow placed his dream on the backburner, until he met Heinz who motivated him to also take a shot at becoming a hero.[1][3]

While in the Five-colored Blades, Riley was hedonistic[?] and even vain at times, but he was also a helpful and good-natured person.[?] He was ambitious and craved fame,[4] shown by his eagerness to add accomplishments to his name, all in the name of achieving his childhood dream of becoming a legendary hero. He initially tried to accept the differences between him and Heinz,[1] however he grew annoyed by Heinz inaction[?] and left the party to pursue glory on his own.[1]

I’m the second coming of Mikhail, the Divine Spear of Ice. I’m Riley, the Green Wind Spear.

— Riley[1]

After parting ways with the Five-colored Blades, he became more unrestrained. Stuck in Heinz' shadow, he developed a superiority complex, where he believed that Heinz' shadow prevented him from gaining the recognition he deserved.[1] With time, he began displaying elitist behavior. Mired in the delusions of his own grandeur, he truly believed that he was a chosen hero.[4] Although he was fraudulently promoted to B-class and A-class through Earl Palpapek's influence, he believed this was merely something he had long deserved, and had been denied because Heinz had stolen the spotlight.[1]

Who’d want to become a Vampire? I’d rather not live hundreds of years and still be ordered around by someone else.

[1]

His poor character made it difficult for him to work with others,[4] and in turn made it challenging for him to gain reliable companions. Frustrated by his lack of companions, he eventually employed criminal slaves, inspired by past heroes.[1] Despite his reputation being hurt by several scandals, he simply brushed them off and continued as before.[5]

Background[]

Growing up, Riley's childhood dream was to become like the protagonists of the heroic tales he heard as a child. Thus, as a commoner with confidence in his skills, Riley became an adventurer, in order to earn gold and with his dream in mind. He approached Heinz as a novice, and the two formed a party together, which would later grow to become the Five-colored Blades.[1]

However, as their reputation grew, only Heinz seemed to gain recognition, while the rest of them were stuck in his shadow as merely "one of Heinz' companions", sowing seeds of jealousy in Riley. After a disagreement between the two of them, Riley left the party and signed a specialist contract with Earl Palpapek. Though he struggled with gathering reliable companions, he eventually reached B-class and acquired the title Green Wind Spear.[1]

Growing frustrated with his lack of companions, Riley took inspiration from past heroes and purchased slaves,[1] whom he trained into adventurers.[4] He eventually upgraded to criminal slaves, which hurt his reputation and his relationship with his employer. Despite the quests he successfully completed, he wasn't promoted to A-class.[1]

Hearing of the Second Talosheim Expedition, he nullified his contract with the earl, and was hired by General Mauvid, with the potential of signing a specialist contract with the Mauvid family of earls. He was also contacted by Ternecia, who offered to make him a hero in exchange for extermining the dhampir and two traitors. Joining forces with High Priest Bormack Gordan, he was promptly promoted to A-class.[1]

Riley was praised for a short while, just like the protagonists of heroic folk songs that he had dreamed of, because of the deal that he made with the Vampires. However, he is currently known in the Mirg Shield-Nation as ‘the fallen hero,’ and it is as if he was never treated as a hero at all.[?]

Abilities[]

Riley possessed enough talent to become at least A-class, however his lack of capable companions, who possessed the same talent as him, held him back from reaching his full potential.[4] Unfortunately, Riley never got to realize the full potential of his talents.[6]

The Second Coming of the Tragic Hero[6], his title was treated as XX's Jeanne d'Arc or XX's Sakamoto Ryouma, so it didn't bestow any negative adjustments on his status.[6]
