Undead are the result of souls lingering in the world without being reincarnated. Most still return to the transmigration system eventually, though immortal beings never do.[1]

Description[]

Usually skeletons and low level ghosts cannot remember things like appetite, they also can't distinguish how things taste, however zombies and some high level undeads can remember appetite and their sense of taste.[2]

Even though undead don't need any food to live, they cannot scape completely from the sensations they had in their old lives:[2]

  • Rest - Even though undeads don't feel tired, they still do it to recover from their mental fatigue and the satisfaction it gives.[2]
  • Libido - As their bodies are completely dead they don't feel any urge to leave offspring but they still can do the deed to extract living being vitality, they also can do it if they die with a strong attachment to sexual desire[2]
  • Appetite - The only one that can be preserved completely, it can be kept on the undead soul making them to eat the bodies flesh and drink its blood to absorb the mana and turn it into experience points, the ones that can do this are zombies and high rank skeletons and ghost that can create temporary bodies with the [spiritual body] skill.[2]

Appearance[]

Temperament[]

Undead are at risk of losing their sanity, at which point they would turn into mindless monsters. As monsters, they are impossible to tame. Only a few are sane enough to converse with, and even then, there's no guarantee that they were friendly towards the living. Furthermore, just by existing, undead are sources of disease.[3]

The undead are possessed by their lingering attachments, through the fear and despair which filled them at the moment of their deaths, which usually took the form of hatred and grudges towards the living, whom they would seek to attack.[4]

Abilities[]

In order to prevent a corpse from turning into an undead, it must either be destroyed thoroughly or a memorial service must be held for it. Dousing the body in holy water will purify the deceased's spirit, but it cannot prevent the corpse from being possessed by other spirits. Corpses become undead more easily if there are other undead nearby.[5]

Undeads are able to see spirits.[6] But that does not necessarily mean that they can hear what the spirits have to say, nor make the spirits willing to answer properly.[7]

Undead of Rank 3 and above can use the martial skills they used while they were alive. And since they’re Undead, there’s no limit to their stamina.[?]

They have a weakness to silver,[8] something which vampires have inherited.[9]

Reproduction[]

If transplanted with Life Gold, undead are able to reproduce and pass on this ability to their offspring. Offspring are born as the same race as one of their parents, developing like ordinary children would until they reach adulthood. If one of the parents are not Undead, the child is born as ordinary living people. Through Luciliano's experiments, they plan to perform further research on undead reproduction by experimenting on Live-Dead corpses and by capturing some live bandits.[4]

Culture[]

They are generally unproductive and does not form societies. They may organize themselves in hierarchies following the law of the jungle, or use the one's established while they were still alive, but usually they were simply disorganized groups of Undead individuals. "Even if the Undead had two hundred years, they might be able to sweep, clean and wash dishes, but would they be able to perform such advanced, large-scale work as repairing the city’s walls."[?][10]

"The Undead had been freed from such a state by Vandalieu’s guidance, and it would be fine if they were to destroy themselves to follow Vandalieu into their next lives after his death. But if they were to be driven insane from the sadness and despair of losing their master, or if they were to return to being wild Undead after the loss of his guidance, then the threat they posed was unimaginable."[4]

Relationships[]

It's only natural for the living to be wary of them, as they are more often than not hostile and otherwise sources of disease.[3]

Vida's Faction are tolerant of undead, though they don't recognize them as people. Vida's religion teaches that undead's lingering wishes should be granted if possible, and then they should be returned to the cycle of reincarnation. But ultimately they believed that undead needed to be defeated like Alda's believers, since undead are dangerous.[3]

Some people are unaware that undead cannot be tamed, for instance Tarea who ceased to be human over 200 years ago in her teenage years.[5]
