Zanalpadna NationArchitectureHistoryRelationships

Zanalpadna nation (ザナルパドナ国 ()) is a city-state located south of the Boundary Mountain Range.[3]

Geography[]

From the southern tip of the marshlands where the evil god Fidirg and his Lizardmen live, Zanalpadna nation is about three days walk for the Arachne and about ten days march for ordinary humans.[4]

The city is located in a fairly dangerous Devil's Nest, where one risked encountering rank 4 monsters. Therefore, the citizens would use the Shell-less Open Field as an emergency shelter, since there one would only encounter rank 1 monsters in the upper areas, making it safer than the city itself.[5] Because of these risks, small communities with non-combatants yielded too little benefits to be maintained.[3]

Architecture[]

It is a quite large-scale settlement with walls twice as tall as in Talosheim to keep monsters out. The city consists of at least one large city, with enough space for villages and smaller settlements within. It is far larger than Niarki, but still smaller than Nineland.[3]

To keep monsters out, the city has walls twice as tall as in Talosheim. It's made of heavy rocks, and are reminiscent of the subtly-built stone walls of Japanese fortresses: The beauty in the plain, unrefined pattern created by joining stones of different sizes together without leaving any gaps in between. The walls were created by joining stones together using arachne thread. The entrance is camouflaged, and it will appear as if there's no door nor gate that allows entry and exit. There's also peeking windows and gates of various sizes hidden within the walls, though they will appear as the rest of the walls.[3]

Cultural practice[]

As is the case with entire area of the Warhammer's handle, it is difficult for humans and other species without rank as monsters to operate as combatants outside of city walls, because there are full of rank 3-4 monsters, the equivalent of Earth's brown bears and tyrannosaurs. Many die before they are able to act as fighters.[2]

For this reason, the social structure is such that Arachnes and Empusas as combatants protect those who are needed for labour and reproduction, and humans and other protected peoples support them with labour and childcare.[2]

The inhabitants live in tower-shaped houses, and the society is matriarchal, with the powerful but female-only Arachnes and Empusas, and the non-combatant women who are necessary for the maintenance of the species of males' side, share the male.[2]

Women of the warrior class value loyalty and are ashamed to have their loyalty questioned.[6]

Friendship and marriage necklaces[]

Necklaces, a medal made by shaving off the cast-off skin around my compound eyes with a string made of my thread,” Gizania said. “This is called a ‘necklace of deep affection,’ and it is proof that the one who possesses it is close to a member of the Arachne race.[?]

The necklaces made by polishing the cast-off skin that came off when Arachne and Empusa molted. When given to those of the same gender, they were proof of close friendship.[?]

However, the meaning of the necklaces changed when given to those of the opposite gender. Giving the necklace of deep affection to someone of the opposite gender was the same as proposing, and accepting the necklace was accepting the proposal. And wearing the necklace around one’s neck had the same meaning as wearing a wedding ring.[?]

In human nations, it would be a great problem for a queen’s daughter, even one who was not called a princess, to decide her marriage partner on her own. However, in Zanalpadna, one’s bloodline was not the only thing that decided succession to the throne. In fact, it was an Empusa who had served as queen before Queen Donaneris.[?]
